Vendors preparing for opening day at the Minnesota State Fair

Updated: August 21, 2019 10:30 PM

When attendees step foot on the fairgrounds, they quickly realize what it takes to put on the Great Minnesota Get-Together. Vendors are busy hauling beer, painting, fixing chairs and washing the place down.

And since 1968, Fred Pitroff and family has had the number one ride at the Minnesota State Fair: the Giant Slide

"I think they figured out about nine million people (have ridden the slide) over the last 50 years," Pittroff said.

That means over 200,000 people a year have hooped and hollered down this iconic five-story ride.

"Most of the people here are adults that ride with their grandchildren and run three (or) four generations," he said. "Parents get as much thrill out of it as the kids do because they all remember when they were kids."

While Pittroff is a veteran fair, Kate Sidoti and her husband Patrick are rookies. They opened up Brim, an organic food restaurant in UpTown almost a year ago. Now they are vending at the fair for the first time.

"We did a couple tastings ... came up with a menu, pitched an idea and are thrilled that we got in," Sidoti said.

Are they nervous?

"I'm nervous for every reason you could be like good, bad or otherwise," Patrick Sidoti said.
