The Minnesota State Fair gets underway Thursday.

And on Wednesday, crews and vendors were hard at work setting up.

Vendors in the West End Market were unpacking boxes and setting up displays. The owners of Greg’s Toys have been making the trip from North Carolina to sell handmade toys for nearly a decade.

“Come for the big party every year,” Greg Stebel said.

“We've been coming for nine years now and we enjoy it like everybody else. We have a lot of friends, fellow vendors and we have a lot of repeat customers we enjoy to see. We see the children grow up over the years.”

Nordic Waffles owner Steen Aasland was putting the finishing touches on her waffle stand. It’s a traditional Norwegian cabin, complete with a goat on the grass covered roof.

Aasland moved to Minnesota from Norway three years ago. She said it’s been her goal to open a spot at the fair since her first visit there.

“I was amazed,” she said. “I don't think I’ve ever seen that many people walking on one street at the same time. It was crazy. It became a dream for me from the very beginning to come to the Minnesota State Fair.”

There are more than 300 food vendors at the fair this year, and more than 30 rides.

The DNR delivered fish to its live exhibit Wednesday morning. The exhibit has been a staple since 1905.

They have about three dozen species of fish. And this year, they’re highlighting the paddlefish - usually found in the St. Croix and lower Mississippi River.

“The fish you see you're not going to see anywhere else,” DNR fisheries specialist Donn Schrader said.

“We try to supply things that show people what's out there, and anything unusual they're not going to see.”

The fair opens for 2018 at 6 a.m. Thursday.
