A member of the University of Minnesota's governing body has announced her resignation.

Regent Patricia Simmons, on the 12-member Board of Regents since 2003, made the announcement Wednesday.

"Serving the University of Minnesota has been a great privilege," she said. "The University is an extraordinary institution of inestimable value to the people of Minnesota, and in fact is a great asset to the nation and the world."

Simmons' term was set to expire in 2021. She plans to step down this spring, a university release said.

The state Legislature will decide on her replacement.
