Jacob Wetterling's kidnapping went unsolved for nearly three decades until Danny Heinrich confessed to his crimes in 2016.
But even after all these years, the public has still seen and heard very little from Heinrich. That changed Thursday with the release of tens of thousands of investigative files.
Jailhouse transcripts reveal phone calls between Heinrich and his brother David where, one month after his arrest on child pornography charges in October 2015, he admits he "had pornography."
"But that's all I had," Heinrich said. "I never touched that kid ... I'm going to fight this tooth and nail, all the way to the end, no matter what."
Investigation revealed that to be a lie. And according to the Stearns County sheriff, Heinrich has lied repeatedly since he was first named a suspect in 1989.
"He fails a polygraph examination given by an FBI agent as to whether he was involved in the Cold Spring abduction or the Wetterling kidnapping," Don Gudmundson said.
After Heinrich eventually confessed to the FBI in August 2016 and led them to where he buried Wetterling's body, he appeared to come clean to his brother.
"A lot of people are (pissed) off because I didn't get charged with murder, I got charged with one count of child pornography," Heinrich said, according to transcripts.
"But that's the deal I made. I didn't have to confess to this because they didn't have s*** on me as far as Wetterling goes."
"Well at least the family has some closure," David replied.
In one phone call, Heinrich told his brother that he has not touched anyone in 27 years - no one since Wetterling, he claimed.
Heinrich is serving his prison sentence at a facility outside of Boston. He will be 70 years old before he is released.
