Blevins Case Evidence Analyzed, Internal Investigation Continues

Community activists have called for more protests this week over the shooting death of 31-year-old Thurman Blevins.

Tensions rose after Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced charges would not be filed against two Minneapolis police officers involved in the incident last month.

Freeman made that announcement Monday, after the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension released body camera video and other evidence.

Those files included interviews with both officers, crime scene photos and other videos taken at the scene.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned investigators found a 9mm handgun near Blevins' body. As a convicted felon, Blevins was not allowed to possess a gun.

Investigators interviewed the gun's legal owner, who said his family knows Blevins. The owner told investigators the last time he saw that gun was before he left for a trip to California in June and he said he doesn't know how Blevins got it.

In separate interviews with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, officers Ryan Kelly and Justin Schmidt described Blevins pointing a gun at them.

"I feared for my life at this point," Schmidt said. "He had made too many conscious decisions for me to believe that he was going to give up; he had every intention of inflicting bodily harm. I feared for my life, for my partner's life."

"All I know was I thought my partner was shot or getting shot at," Ryan said. "That's when he had the gun in his hand and he turned and the barrel was pointing at me."

Kelly said that's also why he fired at Blevins.

Kelly and Schmidt are on paid administrative leave, which is standard, and an internal investigation is underway.
