Teen sentenced in Northeast Minneapolis fatal failed carjacking

A 17-year-old was sentenced in connection to a fatal shooting in Northeast Minneapolis.

Jered Ohsman was sentenced Monday to just over 21 years (261 months) in prison in connection to the shooting death of Steven Markey.

According to a criminal complaint, on June 11, 2019, Markey was shot at the intersection of 14th Avenue Northeast and Tyler Street Northeast. The complaint said Ohsman and a 15-year-old accomplice approached Markey’s car with a gun. During the incident, the two fired the guns, striking Markey twice.

Markey attempted to drive away but crashed his vehicle. He later died from his injuries while at a hospital.

After the shooting, Ohsman and the teen were seen on surveillance video changing clothes and hiding a backpack that contained the weapons used during the shooting, the complaint states.

Once it was determined that Ohsman was a suspect in the shooting, law enforcement learned that he and the 15-year-old suspect had been arrested together for suspicion of auto theft and burglary.

According to a complaint, Ohsman later admitted to police that he’d shot Markey while trying to steal his vehicle. He allegedly told authorities he’d told Markey to get out of the vehicle and nobody would get hurt, but shot him when Markey started to reach for something he believed could’ve been a gun.

Ohsman, who was certified to stand trial as an adult, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in March.
