Officers were in the area of West River Parkway and Third Avenue on Aug. 12 when they located a man lying on the ground bleeding. The complaint says officers found a knife blade that had broken off from the handle next to the man and saw he was stabbed multiple times. Paramedics later arrived and determined he had died.

Investigators said the man, later identified as Burka Osman Mohammed, had been in downtown Minneapolis earlier that night, with cameras showing him with three other men. One of the men were later located and arrested, and told officers the group had been down by the river when Yusuf got aggressive and started stabbing Mohammed. The complaint also states the witness said he ran away, but Yusuf later called him and threatened him, telling him to not say anything about the stabbing.

Another witness told investigators he tried to stop the stabbing before running away with the other witness, but Yusuf threatened to stab him too, the complaint states.

After officers arrested Yusuf, he admitted to stabbing Mohammend, the complaint states. However, it says he claimed to have stabbed him two or three times and didn't know Mohammed had died until he saw it in the news the next day.

The autopsy showed Mohammed suffered 14 separate sharp injuries, including seven to the chest.

If convicted, Yusuf can face up to 40 years in prison.
