A Brevator Township man was killed in a Saturday morning shooting on the Fond du Lac Reservation, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said.

WDIO reports that deputies from the St. Louis County Sheriff's office and officers from the Fond du Lac Police Department responded to a call of a shooting around 5 a.m. on the 3500 block of Brevator Road. Authorities found James Arthur Couture, 65, dead at the scene.


A preliminary investigation indicates Couture died from a gunshot wound, the sheriff's office said.

A 42-year-old Brevator Township man is in custody at St. Louis County Jail on a preliminary charge of second-degree murder. The man's name has not yet been released, and formal charges are pending.

The sheriff's office said the shooting occurred at the 42-year-old's residence.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Fond du Lac Police Department are actively investigating the incident.
