1 dead, 1 injured after explosion, house fire in Dakota County

The Dakota County Sheriff's Department said one person was killed and another was badly injured following a house explosion Tuesday morning in Hampton Township.

According to a release, sheriff's deputies and first responders from the Randolph/Hampton and Northfield Fire Departments were dispatched to a report of an explosion on the 24000 block of Lewiston Boulevard (south of the City of Hampton) at around 6:14 a.m. According to the release, the sheriff's office received reports the explosion could be heard as far away as Hastings and Farmington.

Upon arrival on the scene, deputies encountered a man with severe burns over much of his body who said he was looking for his wife. Deputies and firefighters began searching for the woman.

A body was recovered from the blast debris at around 8:55 a.m., the release states.

The man was taken to Regions Hospital's Burn Center for medical attention. The man and his wife are believed to have been the only occupants of the house at the time of the explosion.

The release said investigators are still working to determine the cause of the blast. Identification of those involved is being withheld until their identities are confirmed and family members have been notified.

The KSTP crew at the scene reported seeing smoke above the treeline and a number of fire trucks and sheriff's department vehicles outside the home near Highway 52.
