Multiple people were injured Saturday evening following a bus crash on Interstate 94 near St. Michael, according to Lt. Tiffani Nielson of the Minnesota State Patrol.

A State Patrol incident report said the crash occurred at 6:46 p.m. at I-94 and Highway 241.

The bus involved was transporting the women's basketball team from Highland Community College, located in Freeport, Illinois.

Nielson said the bus was eastbound, when the bus driver had a medical episode. The bus went into the median, striking trees and a freeway sign, before it reentered the interstate. The bus eventually came to a rest in a ditch.

Eric Smith, of Buffalo, said he caught a glimpse of the bus after sitting in traffic.

"It looked like the right front corner of the bus was crushed in," Smith said. "It looked like some of the right side was wrinkled up and stuff."

The bus driver, 64-year-old Paul William Cheeseman, was transported to North Memorial Medical Center for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to Nielson. A spokesperson for the Monticello Hospital said 11 patients were brought in from the bus crash in fair condition. They were expected to be released Saturday night, according to the spokesperson.

Five passengers on the bus were treated for non-life threatening injuries at CentraCare Health Monticello, ranging from ages 18-26.

A KSTP reporter on scene said the bus was cleared from the interstate and that traffic was moving again by 9 p.m.

Cheeseman is the owner of the Cheeseman Coach Bus that crashed.
