High school students in St. Paul are raising money for the family of a good Samaritan who died in a shooting.

Javier Sanmiguel was shot and killed while checking on people who were injured in a car crash. Police say Lionel Eaton, 27, shot Sanmiguel. He has since been charged with murder.

In response to the killing, Humboldt High School students started a fundraiser to raise money for Sanmiguel's family to support them as they grieve the loss of a husband and father.

A separate GoFundMe page has raised more than $186,000. The students set a goal of $1,000 for their fundraiser.

"We just wanted to shine a light on someone we knew was a good person who died in vain," said Humboldt student Ranee Hester. "We wanted to make things better for him and his family."
