October 06, 2017 05:28 AM

Friday, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will continue the investigation into a deadly officer-involved shooting in St. Paul.

Sgt. Mike Ernster, spokesman with the St. Paul Police Department, said officers were called at 6 p.m. to a residence in the 400 block of Earl Street on reports of shots fired during a domestic situation.

Officers were able to locate a woman who said she was shot at while calling 911. The woman was not injured. Ernster said the woman reported a male suspect fired two shots at her and that five children were still inside the home.

After making sure the children were safe, officers began searching for the suspect. When officers made contact with the suspect, shots were fired and the suspect was hit, according to Ernster.

Ernster said paramedics provided aid to the suspect, however, he was pronounced dead on scene. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner is expected to release the identity of the individual.

Ernster said a gun was also located on scene.

The officers involved in the shooting were wearing activated body-worn cameras at the time of the incident, according to Ernster.

The Minnesota Bureau of Investigation will investigate the shooting.

"The community has asked for independent third party investigations into officer involved shootings and we are trying to honor that," Ernster said.

Multiple witnesses in the area also told KSTP shots were fired by an officer. A cell phone video shot by one witness shows police had a home surrounded.

"They were all staked out looking at a house and we saw guys on a swat team," Kim Gross of St. Paul said. "And about 10 to 20 minutes later, they all ran that way and started shooting."
