The St. Paul Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred Saturday morning.

According to St. Paul Police Spokesman Steve Linders, officers and firefighters responded to a call around 10 a.m. involving a smell of something burning at 1459 Payne Avenue. Instead of finding a house fire, officials found an adult woman who lived there, that had suffered a life-ending injury. St. Paul Fire medics pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Linders said officers found an adult male inside the residence, 59-year-old Dah Eh Ray, an estranged husband of the woman. The victim lived at the home, but he didn't. Ray was brought to police headquarters for interviews and placed under arrest for suspicion of murder. Ray is currently being held in Ramsey County jail. The case is being considered a domestic homicide.

"Motive will be part of the investigation, we will find out why he was there and what led to the tragic event," Linders said Saturday.

Angela James ran over to the victim's home to see for herself what happened to her friend.

"What occurred was not the first time. They had arguments before, but that this was going to happen, I had no idea that this would be the end result," she said.

Police say they have responded to the residence five times for domestic disturbances. Ray was arrested last October, for violating a domestic abuse protection order. Neighbors told KSTP they did not hear any gunfire but did hear a woman wailing.

The Crime Lab team spent the day collecting evidence, taking pictures, and talking with others in the home at the time. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will complete an autopsy to positively identify her and the exact cause of death.

Rich Nymoen lives right next door. He saw the commotion in the morning and wondered what happened. When he noticed authorities roll a gurney with a body out of the home and into a hearse, he realized it was his longtime neighbor.

"It's hard to absorb at this point, it's hard to understand what happened or why," he said.
