UPDATE: Suspect arrested following homicide in Payne-Phalen neighborhood

Police are investigating a homicide in northeast St. Paul Monday.

Sgt. Mike Ernster, with the St. Paul Police Department, addressed the incident on Monday at a press conference. He said the incident happened on the 1000 block of Sims Avenue.

"A rare midday murder here in St. Paul," Sgt. Ernster said. "There is currently a search for suspects."

According to police, a woman called 911 reporting someone was shot in the area around 10:30 a.m. and frantically requested an ambulance be sent to the address before hanging up. A second 911 caller confirmed the incident. When police arrived on scene, they located a man in the bedroom of the residence with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

After being transported to Regions Hospital, the man was pronounced dead around 2 p.m.

"Homicide investigators are working to determine who was involved, and what led to a person being shot and killed," Ernster said.

Neighbors said the home had just been sold and converted into a rental property on Airbnb. Police confirmed this is a part of their investigation.

St. Paul police will work with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner to determine the identity of the victim and the exact cause of death. The department's forensic services unit is processing the scene with the hope to find physical evidence that will tell the story of what led to the homicide.

This is the 14th homicide in the city this year. Additionally, Ernster added this is the 96th person shot in St. Paul in 2019.
