St. Paul police say a man is dead after a shooting Friday afternoon in a North End neighborhood.
The shots were fired in the 400 block of Maryland Avenue West around 12:15 p.m., striking a man by a car in the parking lot of a busy strip mall.
"Armageddon happened over there," said a neighbor who asked that her name not be used. "I'm thinking… I just missed death myself."
Officers established a perimeter and began working to identify possible witnesses.
In a tweet Saturday morning, the St. Paul Police Department stated that they arrested Lavelle Darvon Brown, 27, of St. Paul, in connection with the incident. Brown was booked in the Ramsey County Jail Saturday morning on suspicion of murder, the tweet said.
The investigation indicates some witnesses may have seen a suspect speed away from the scene in a gray SUV.
Police have not released the identity of the man killed at the scene.
A woman who knew the man could be heard yelling, "What happened?" over-and- over to the detectives inside the crime tape.
"It's a brazen act of violence-- that is absolutely outrageous," said Steve Linders, St. Paul police spokesman. "It happened in broad daylight, in the middle of a Friday afternoon, in a busy commercial area."
Police said they are in that part of the North End often, as they responded last year to 24 calls for service, and made 192 proactive policing visits.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS learned there is security camera footage being reviewed by detectives for clues.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the St. Paul Police Department's Homicide Unit at 651-266-5650.
