St. Cloud Officials, Residents to Discuss Moratorium on Refugee Resettlement

St. Cloud city officials are expected to discuss refugees in the city Monday.

The discussion comes after a city councilor proposed a resolution temporarily banning refugees in St. Cloud.

Community members, some city council members and the mayor have been pushing back on the resolution.

The mayor says the council should be focused on welcoming people instead of trying to stop refugee settlements.

That's precisely what council member Jeff Johnson has said he wants, insisting local government has a role in controlling it.

After a recent push from a group of residents, Johnson drafted the proposed moratorium on primary refugee settlements. It says the overall quality of life for St. Cloud residents will continue to be adversely impaired by excessive demands on local resources.

The mayor, however, says the resolution doesn't reflect the community or even a majority of the council. He agrees with Haji Yussuf, who has lived in St. Cloud for a decade now.

Yussuf told KSTP the issue is a federal one, and argues this proposal is only bringing negative attention to the city.

"As a city councilor, he's not supposed to do that, he's not allowed to do that, he doesn't have those powers, but the individuals he's trying to reach out to and trying to please, I think got into him, and got into his head, or maybe he's following in the footsteps of our new president Donald Trump," Yussuf said.

Johnson plans to introduce the resolution next month, but dozens of residents plan to pack the council chambers Monday night to condemn it. That meeting starts at 6 p.m.
