So Minnesota: Operation Cakes for Troops

Updated: November 14, 2019 03:06 PM

Monday is Veterans Day, an opportunity for all to pay respects to those who have served.

One woman is making sure the troops have a special gift from home this holiday season.

Hiltrud Steimel is behind Operation Cakes for Troops.

Hiltrud is teaming up with Rush City Bakery to ship out more than 500 cakes over the holidays to troops away from home and family.

"Each of the cakes will have a note on it that will say, 'Dear Soldier, we are thinking of you at this holiday time and sending you a sweet greeting from Minnesota,'" Hiltrud said. "So they know it isn't just something that was shoved into a box but something really thought of them."

Hiltrud has done this for more than a decade and the photos she received are still etched in her mind.

"One was a soldier standing there in his fatigues and he had the cake in his hands, and he just grinned ear to ear," she said.

Each Operation Cakes for Troops cake costs $40, which covers the cost of baking, packaging and shipping the cakes. All orders are placed via PayPal.

Deadline for orders is Dec. 3. Cakes will be shipped on Dec. 10 to ensure delivery by Dec. 22. Each cake will have a holiday greeting attached.
