Multiple witnesses told KSTP shots were fired Sunday night at Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis.

Upon arrival to the scene, KSTP saw at least nine shell casings with evidence markers, multiple police cars and detectives at the scene.

According to Minneapolis Park Police, shots were fired around 8 p.m. in a parking lot at the Wabun Picnic area at Minnehaha Park. It's located close to a splash pad filled with children and a pavilion where dozens of families were hanging out.

Ignacio Melendez had his entire family with him for a cookout and party.

"The [hardest] part for me is there were kids around here, kids that were crying, the violence between people needs to be stopped," Martinez said.

The gunfire erupted in the parking lot within sight of the Minnesota Veterans Home.

Authorities say two groups of people were firing at each other. At this time, there are no known victims, however, hospitals in St. Paul and Minneapolis have been told to be on the lookout for gunshot victims driving themselves in.

Park Police interviewed several eyewitnesses at the scene including one man, J.C., who said he came face-to-face with one of the trigger-men.

"He was close and one guy started to shoot at him first, this guy close to me had a rifle, he lifted it and turned at him, then he turned and pointed the big gun at me. I didn't know what to do," he said.

Minneapolis Park Police are just beginning their investigation. They collected evidence from the scene and talked with numerous witnesses.  Both groups fled in vehicles in opposite directions. No one had been arrested as of 11 p.m. Sunday night.
