Jason Fugate caught a huge, bright orange, fish while bowfishing in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Nobody knew what it was until NDSU Biologist Dr. Alec Lackmann visited to see it and take samples. He had never seen a fish like it, either.
Turns out this mystery fish is rare and very old. Based on his analysis of the fish's otoliths, Lackmann says it's clear the fish is more than 100 years old and is one of the oldest he's looked at. Its orange color may have something to do with its age; a genetic mutation, or combination of the two.
Fugate was wearing a camera on a head strap when he caught the big fish. Watch as he describes in his own words what that moment was like.
