Dakota County officers have filed an application for a search warrant as part of an investigation into a fatal hit-and-run in Inver Grove Heights Saturday.
The incident happened on 80th Street, east of Blaine Avenue, just before 6 p.m. Authorities said a vehicle struck a 55-year-old woman and then the driver left the scene.
The driver was later identified as 30-year-old Breyona Sadi Cotton, from Inver Grove Heights, and the victim was identified as 55-year-old Haimanot Gebrenedhin, from Inver Grove Heights.
Cotton, who told investigators she was the driver of the vehicle that struck Gebrenedhin, said she had thought she struck a deer. She told investigators she stopped the vehicle, didn't see anything, and proceeded on her way home.
Authorities have now filed for a search warrant to investigate the interior and exterior of the vehicle, including taking photos of the vehicle, swabbing the vehicle for DNA, and collecting any items "that could have altered the driver's ability to operate the motor vehicle safely."
