Search warrant: Man left suicide note at scene of triple-homicide, suicide in south Minneapolis

A man who killed his two young sons and ex-wife in south Minneapolis on Sunday had a permit to purchase a firearm and left a suicide note at the scene.

According to a Minneapolis Police Department search warrant executed on the property, a suicide note was found near Dave Schladetzky. Two fired bullets and a live cartridge were found outside the home. A pistol magazine and live cartridge with a bullet fired was also recovered inside the residence.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired that was quickly upgraded to a shooting around 10 a.m. Sunday at a house near Oakland Avenue South and 28th Street East. Officers found the two boys, identified by the Medical Examiner as 11-year-old Will and 8-year-old Nelson, in the yard suffering from gunshot wounds. They were put in squad cars and driven away from the scene, but both were later pronounced dead from their injuries.

South Minneapolis community gathers to remember woman, children killed in domestic-related shooting

Their mother, identified as Kjersten Schladetzky, was found dead inside the south Minneapolis home from a stab wound to the chest and gunshot wounds.

Police said the deaths were caused by domestic violence. Witnesses said the gunman was the boys' father and that he shot the boys out in the street before going inside and shooting Schladetzky. The shooter was identified as David Stout Schladetzky, 53. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the medical examiner said.

In the days since, James Adams has struggled to understand the motive. Adams knew the entire family and says Dave and Kjersten hired him to daycare the boys who felt more like family than friends.

"That was the hardest thing losing those boys, when you're in that close environment and you spend many hours with each other teaching them potty training, brush their teeth, educating them on ABC's and overall development of a little human being, I feel empty," said Adams.

Court records show the mother and the boys' father were divorced and shared joint custody of their sons. Because it's an ongoing investigation, it could take some time before the circumstances become clear.
