St. James Man Arrested after 2 Women Shot, 1 Fatally

St. James police report a 59-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the murder of one woman and the attempted murder of another.

A release states police received an emergency 911 call at around 5:41 p.m. Saturday. The caller allegedly stated his grandfather had shot his grandmother.


Upon arriving on the scene, on the 1,000 block of 1st Avenue South in St. James, the release alleges the responding officer found and arrested Scott Francis Engelbrecht, who was reportedly carrying a .22 caliber rifle.

His wife, 67-year-old Joyce Ann Engelbrecht suffered a gunshot wound, according to the release. She was flown to a medical facility in Rochester where she is listed in critical condition. The release states she is not expected to survive.

Meanwhile, the release states the body of 43-year-old Rachel Elaine Linder was found on the front steps of a neighboring home. According to the release, she is Joyce Engelbrecht's daughter from a previous marriage.

The release adds Scott Engelbrecht is being held at the Watonwan County Jail. Formal charges have not yet been filed.
