Schools Request More than $250M in Grant Money for Security Improvements

More than 1,000 schools have sent in applications requesting Minnesota Department of Education grant money for school security improvements, according to department officials.

Districts had until the end of the day on Aug. 29 to apply for the grants to receive an equal chance of being selected, according to Minnesota Department of Education Communications Director Josh Collins.

The $25 million in grant money available was approved during the 2018 legislative session. 

Assistant Director of Communications Emily Bisek said a total of 1,265 applications were sent in on Aug. 29, requesting almost $259 million. That's more than 10 times the amount of funding that is available. 

The formal submission deadline for school districts is Sept. 28.
