As of 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, more than 600 schools had applied for Minnesota Department of Education grant money for school security improvements - requesting more than six times the funds that are available, according to a department spokesperson.
The $25 million in grant money available was approved during the 2018 legislative session.
In total, with the 649 complete applications from school districts, more than $150 million in requests have been made, according to Minnesota Department of Education Communications Director Josh Collins

Districts had until the end of the day Wednesday to receive an equal chance of being selected, according to Collins.
The formal submission deadline for school districts is Sept. 28.
