School district referendums pass in metro areas, struggle in Greater Minnesota

May 15, 2019 08:38 PM

Voters in many school districts across Minnesota decided on referendum questions Tuesday, and the results varied based on geography.

In metro districts, 100 percent of the referendums passed Tuesday, compared to just six of 16 in Greater Minnesota districts, or 37.5 percent.

Levy and bond referendums in 2018 ended with similar results: 100 percent approved in metro districts, 57 percent in Greater Minnesota.

One of those that failed Tuesday asked for $116 million to build a new high school in Owatonna on a larger site. Despite support from many local businesses, the referendum was narrowly defeated, with 5,758 people voting no and 5,642 voting yes.

However, the approval of a $275 million referendum will impact the North Saint Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale school district for years to come.

Voters Tuesday approved a plan to build new schools, expand campuses and close other buildings in the district.

61% of voters approved. The average homeowner will now pay $5 more per month.

"We're very excited that we get to move forward and really start to renovate our school district," District 622 Superintendent Christine Osorio said
