One child and a bus driver were hurt in a crash involving a Tutor Time school bus in Cottage Grove Wednesday morning.

According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred in the area of Hinton Avenue South and South 80th Street at about 7:30 a.m. The crash was near Crestview Elementary.

Cottage Grove Police Captain, Randy McAlister, said it's always stressful responding to a scene involving children.

"That's one of worse situations you can imagine as a patrol officer because it's constantly going through your mind as you are responding to the scene...how many injuries are there, how bad are they, if you have kids yourself, you sort of think about them as well, so it's a pretty big deal for patrol officers," said McAlister.

A statement from Tutor Time indicated seven "school-age" children were aboard the bus at the time of the crash.

Crestview staff as well as the bus driver evacuated the children from the bus immediately following the crash, according to the statement.

One child was taken to a nearby hospital with a minor injury and the bus driver was also taken in for evaluation.

The statement reports the rest of the children were not hurt and were taken to their respective elementary schools.

"Nothing is more important to us than our children's safety," the statement continues. "We'd like to thank the responders as well as the staff at both Crestview Elementary and Newport Elementary for their assistance."

Originally, the Washington County Sheriff's Office stated three people were hurt.

The Tutor Time statement indicated the families of those involved have been notified.

"You think about the force it would take to knock a bus over on its side. It could have been a lot worse than it was so we are all very happy and everything is cleaned up . Kids are returned to their parents, so it's a better outcome than we could have hoped for," said McAlister.
