"We are deeply saddened to report that a resident of the Navigation Center was discovered to be deceased in their sleeping area on Friday night," a spokesperson for Simpson Housing Services said in a statement. "We extend our sympathies to the family and are working to support the residents and staff of the Navigation Center at this very difficult time.

"At this time, Simpson Housing Services has no additional comment."

The navigation center, which consists of three temporary buildings, can house up to 140 people. Alcohol and drugs are banned there. Those at the center are given access to food, services and security.

Those living at a temporary homeless encampment in the area of Hiawatha Avenue near Franklin and 16th Avenues began moving into the new Navigation Center in December 2018.
