Bystanders at the Minneapolis intersection where George Floyd died ducked for cover Tuesday as the sound of gunshots rang out nearby, taking shelter briefly.

John Elder, a spokesman for the city of Minneapolis, said officers responded to the 3800 block of Elliot Avenue on a report of the sound of shots fired. The area is roughly a block away from what is informally known as George Floyd square. Officers learned a vehicle was seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

The spokesman said that a short time afterward, a person arrived at Abbott Northwestern Hospital with a gunshot wound. That person was transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment of the injury, which is not considered to be life-threatening.

At the time of the incident, an Associated Press journalist shooting video at the intersection of 38th and Chicago reported hearing as many as 30 gunshots about a block from the intersection, and said a storefront window appears to have been broken by a gunshot.

The intersection is to be transformed later Tuesday into an outdoor festival marking the anniversary of Floyd's death, with food, children's activities and a long list of musical performers.
