Keeping students from being shamed when they cannot afford to pay for school lunches is the goal behind a new bill introduced by Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Senator Tina Smith on Wednesday.
The bill - entitled the No Shame at School Act - would prevent schools from singling out such students by publishing lists, making them wear wristbands or other methods.
More from KSTP:
Omar and Smith were joined in Washington by Valerie Castile, the mother of Philando Castile, who was fatally shot by a St. Paul police officer in 2016.
Philando Castile was a cafeteria worker who was known to pay for lunches for students who could not afford it out of his own pocket.
Since his death, his mother has raised money to help pay off student lunch debts.
