A Red Wing man accused of shooting another individual was officially charged on Wednesday.

According to the criminal complaint, John Charles Roberts, 18, is charged in Goodhue County District Court with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, reckless discharge of a firearm within a municipality and two counts of second-degree assault.

Roberts made his first appearance in court on the charges Wednesday, where a conditional bail or bond in the amount of $500,000 and unconditional bail or bond in the amount of $700,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 26 and he is currently being held in Goodhue County Jail.

Red Wing police officers were called around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday to the area of Launa Avenue and Burton Street for a report that a man had been shot in the neck. On arrival, officers were approached by two men — one of whom had been shot.

The man shot is identified as John P. Smith, of Rochester, who turned 19 on Wednesday. Police previously said that Smith was from Red Wing, but he is from Rochester.

Smith had "what appeared to be a bullet wound on the right side of his neck. The wound was a round puncture about the size of a pencil," according to court documents. "Smith was walking and talking and did not seem to be having problems with breathing."

Police arrested Roberts later that same day. He is believed to have fired multiple shots from an upstairs front window at his Twin Bluff Road residence. Smith was sitting in a car in the home's driveway.

Court documents are unclear the motive of the shooting but it may have been in reaction to an incident that occurred a few days earlier. There is no indication that Smith was involved in that earlier incident.
