Red Wing residents dealing with flooded basements

March 14, 2019 10:26 PM

First it was snow, and now it's warm weather and rain wreaking havoc on Minnesotans. With all the melting snow folks across the state are seeing their basements filling up with water.

Red Wing resident Calli Egan went down to her basement, earlier this week, and walked into a puddle of water that covered her basement floor. That night a friend brought a Shop Vac over. So, Egan and her husband spent the night vacuuming up water.

On Thursday, with shovel and gloves in the car, she drove to a pile of sand offered by the city and started filling bags.

"I've probably been here maybe an hour, give or take. I got 25 bags in the car right now and hopefully that's all that we need, but I did buy a hundred, just in case," she said.

Egan and her husband, Andrew, are trying to stop the flow of water going into their basement.

"It was halfway across my workshop, it went all the way underneath storage room under our stairs, it came out on the other side. It was everywhere and we were doing whatever we could to seal it off," Andrew said.

Preventing flooding in homes with sump pumps

The Egans weren't the only ones dealing with basement flooding. At the ACE Hardware store in town, they couldn't keep sump pumps in stock.

"We probably sold, I'd say probably 25 or so, and on average we probably do two or three in a spring," said Troy Daniels, owner of the local ACE Hardware. We usually don't get too much call. Probably the last time we did anything near this is 10 years ago in 2010, that was half of this maybe."

For the Egans, they're a bit nervous about what spring will bring.

"Hopefully we can stop this leak and patch up the few other cracks before that hits," Andrew said.
