Authorities are warning residents in Elk River to be on the lookout after a reported cougar sighting in the city.

According to a Facebook post by the Elk River Police Department, a home security camera on the city's west side captured images of what appears to be a large cat.

Police notified conservation officers but are also advising residents to be aware of their surroundings. 

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, cougar sightings are extremely rare and are often a case of mistaken identity. Because of their rarity, the DNR is interested in gathering information that can be verified by photos or physical evidence.
