Police: South St. Paul man arrested in connection to 1991 murder

Minneapolis police announced Tuesday that a South St. Paul man has been arrested in connection to the 1991 murder of Belinda Thompson. 

The Minneapolis Police Department identified the man as 56-year-old Donald Jenkins Jr.

"Today's arrest demonstrates that we will never give up on these cases. For our cold case unit, our memories are long and our commitment runs deep and we are pleased with today's development in Ms. Thompson's case," Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said.

According to a news release from the Minneapolis Police Department, Thompson, who was 20 at the time of her death, was found in the bedroom of her south Minneapolis apartment on Dec. 19, 1991.

The release said Jenkins was arrested Tuesday in South St. Paul.

Authorities say Jenkins was an acquaintance of Thompson's boyfriend.

Authorities say Jenkins was arrested after the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension conducted additional testing of evidence found at the scene. 

Jenkins is currently being held in the Hennepin County Jail on probable cause murder.
