Two University of Minnesota students were reportedly hurt during an attempted robbery near campus early Wednesday morning.

According to a release from the university, the University of Minnesota Police Department and Metro Transit Police Department responded to the incident at the East Bank light rail station's platform at about 1 a.m.

According to the release, two students told authorities they were approached by two people who began "to verbally harass them" and demand the students' wallets.

When the students refused to hand over their wallets, the two suspects "began physically assaulting them," the release states.

The two students had bruises and cuts on their faces and were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The suspects had left the scene by the time authorities arrived.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Metro Transit Police Department at 612-349-7222 and reference case number 19-006070.
