Police officer shoots, kills man in St. Paul's Midway neighborhood after physical altercation

A police officer shot and killed an adult man in St. Paul's Midway neighborhood on Sunday after a physical altercation, police confirm.

The incident occurred at around 5:50 p.m. at Thomas Avenue West and North Griggs Street, around three blocks from Galtier Community Elementary School.

Police stated that a vehicle rear-ended a St. Paul Police squad car that was stopped at a stop sign.

A fight then ensued, and the officer shot the man, according the police department.

Multiple sources told KSTP that the man had a knife.

An ambulance crew attempted life-saving measures on the man, but he ultimately died.

Police said at a press conference following the incident that the officer was wearing a body camera, and it was on. The officer was placed on standard administrative leave and was not identified.

The incident is under the investigation of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to positively identify the man and determine an exact cause of death.
