A man is dead after what police describe as an altercation Saturday night at Herbie's on the Park in downtown St. Paul.

According to the St. Paul Police Department, police received several reports of an assault with a person down around 11:35 p.m. at a bar on the 300 block of Washington Street. First responders found a 48-year-old man who had suffered a head injury lying on the pavement.

The victim was taken to Regions Hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead Sunday afternoon.

According to witness accounts, the victim fell and hit his head during a physical confrontation on the bar's front steps. Police have identified the other person involved, who left the scene after the incident.

The victim's identity and cause and manner of death will be released following an autopsy report.

No arrests have been made as of Sunday afternoon.
