Packages start arriving offering love and support to Jayme Closs

Support for Jayme Closs is pouring in from around the country. On Tuesday, a box full of packages was waiting for her at the Rice Lake Post Office.

Jayme’s family told us they are overwhelmed by the community’s outreach.

“There’s no doubt she's going to feel so incredibly loved and supported by this,” said Jennifer Halvorson, a friend who picked the packages up.

Halvorson established the P.O. box on Saturday with permission from Jayme’s family.

“To see this so far is fantastic,” she said.

Halvorson told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS she expected to find a few cards. Instead, there were half a dozen boxes and envelopes mailed to Jayme from all over Wisconsin and Kentucky.

“Our plan is to go through everything that is received before Jayme gets it, for safety reasons and such,” said Halvorson.

She said they want to make sure there is nothing included that will upset Jayme.

The first package she opened included a note, which said in part, “Hope this little smile lets you know there are a lot of people on your side. We are so very sorry for your loss and we are thinking of you and keeping you in our prayers. Stay strong, have a wonderful life.”

Another package included a pot with blue butterflies on it, gardening supplies and a Dairy Queen Gift Card. A third package included 3-D butterflies that could be attached to her bedroom wall.

“Butterflies have been a sign of hope and recovery, good things to come,” said Halvorson. “She does have some blue butterflies in her bedroom so this is perfect.”

Halvorson told us she sobbed when she found out Jayme had escaped and was coming home. Her daughter took dance classes with Jayme.

“I think we’ve all just learned that if you keep hope and belief and faith that good things will happen,” she said.

As Halvorson read through the messages, she shared one of her own for Jayme.

“I think that you have inspired an entire world to know that prayers and miracles come true,” she said. “That she's so incredibly strong and that makes her very inspirational to others.”
