One man has died after an SUV crashed into the Kettle River in Pine County Monday afternoon.

According to the Pine County Sheriff's Office, an SUV carrying three occupants crashed into the Kettle River near the town of Willow River.


The vehicle was submerged in about 14 feet of water, according to the sheriff's office.

The 43-year-old driver and one of the passengers, identified as a 48-year-old man, were able to escape, however, a third 47-year-old male passenger could not get out.

The victim's body was recovered by a dive team around 6:05 p.m.

According to the sheriff's office, the driver was arrested and booked on a preliminary charge of criminal vehicular operation.

No names have been released pending notification of family.

This incident remains under investigation.
