North Minneapolis shooting leaves 1 dead

Minneapolis police are investigating a fatal shooting Thursday night on the north side of the city.

Officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation and 911 calls at around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of 18th and Russell avenues in north Minneapolis.

Police said a white SUV sped away from the area and crashed near 16th and Russell avenues. There, authorities found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound in the driver's seat of the SUV.

First aid was rendering until emergency personnel arrived, and the man was then taken to North Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead there.

Police said a man is in custody in connection with the shooting, which is being investigated as a homicide.

The victim's identity and cause of death will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office.
