A North Branch man was airlifted to a hospital after a semi crash in Chisago County on Wednesday morning.

The Chisago County Sheriff's Office said in a release that deputies were called to a crash near 31788 Forest Blvd in Lent Township at about 6:34 a.m.

When deputies arrived, they called air care for the driver of a pickup truck, who had to be extricated from the vehicle, the release said. Once extricated, the man, later identified as 38-year-old David Benjamin Joseph, was flown to Regions Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the semi tractor-trailer was identified as 47-year-old Brent Lee Petersen, of Harris. The sheriff's office said he didn't appear to be injured in the crash.

According to the release, drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the crash, but the case remains under investigation.
