New Brighton has become the latest community in the state of Minnesota to raise the age for legal tobacco sales to 21, according to a release from the Association for Nonsmokers-Minnesota.
The release said the New Brighton City Council passed the ordinance during a unanimous vote at its Tuesday night meeting.
Already well over 30 Minnesota cities and counties have raised the legal age for tobacco purchases to 21. Wilkin County in western Minnesota became the latest to do so Tuesday morning when county commissioners voted unanimously to raise the age.
Wilkin County is the sixth county in the state to officially adopt such a change, joining Otter Tail, Pope, Beltrami, Isanti and Olmsted counties.
