People of all ages gathered at Mall of America to walk for a cure for Type 1 diabetes on Saturday.

More than 20,000 people packed the mall for the JDRF One Walk.

"The goal of JDRF is to fund research that is targeted at prevention and understanding what causes Type 1, finding better treatments and ultimately a cure," said Executive Director Karen Abrahamson.

Caroline Schlehuber was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 3 years old. Now at 15, the teen has been to 13 walks. Her team raised almost $19,000 this year.

"Everyday is kind of a different rollercoaster to tackle," said Schlehuber.

Our own Chris Egert led Team KSTP. His son has Type 1 diabetes. Here in Minnesota, JDRF says more than 300,000 people are diagnosed with Type 1.

"No matter what they eat, drink or exercise, they are still going to have Type 1, and they have to manage it differently and they are insulin dependent," said Abrahamson.

Every year, the local chapter is introduced to 350 new families.

"What I am still surprised at every year is just how much energy there is in the building, just so much we want to help you, we want to make your life better, and it always give me so much hope and it makes me so happy every year," said Schlehuber.
