A small gathering of Republicans at a pizza restaurant in New Hope told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS they were excited to watch President Donald Trump on television as he officially declared his candidacy for re-election.

Chairwoman of the GOP 3rd Congressional District, Patti Meier, told KSTP the president's announcement and renewed commitment to winning in Minnesota is galvanizing.

"The Trump campaign and the National Republican Party are going all out to win Minnesota," said Meier. "They are already opening up field offices across the state, putting more boots on the ground and raising more money in Minnesota than in 2016."

Meier said Minnesota Republicans intend to work harder than they did in 2016, not just to win the state for Trump, but to gain big victories at the state and local levels as well.

"We know if we can do well here in Minnesota, for the president, then we will do better everywhere," said Meier. "We think we can win back control of the Minnesota House and even win back two congressional seats and flip another."

Meier said the Republican base is not wasting any time and plan a call to action, for all party members, starting next week.
