Minnesota Offers Non-Binary Gender Option on REAL IDs

October 02, 2018 12:56 PM

When Minnesotans apply for a new license, they will see a third option to select when it comes to identifying their gender.

Minnesotans can self identify as male, female or non-binary. The non-binary designation will be an "X" in the gender section on an ID.

This makes Minnesota the third state in the nation to offer this. The other states are Oregon and Maine. It is also offered in Washington, D.C.

According to the Minnesota Department of Vehicle Services, "This change was made during the planning for the new driver’s license system. It was a business decision to offer a third option to better serve all Minnesotans. In addition, other states recognize this designation and the federal government allows it under REAL ID."
