Minnesota Moment: Woman finally meets pen pal after 65 years

A St. Peter woman calls it one of the best experiences in her life.

Lorraine Knutson traveled to Australia to meet her pen pal for the first time, a woman she's been writing letters to for 65 years.

Back in 1953 during grade school, Knutson started writing Merle Cantrell in Australia through a pen pal program.

In November, Knutson flew to Australia to finally Cantrell meet in person.

"I knew her right away," Knutson said. "She hadn't changed from her pictures expect she had grey hair.  It just seemed surreal. I didn't think it would ever happen."

Even though the two met, both women plan to continue to write each for years to come.
