Sixteen kids launched their handmade canoes at Lake Como in St. Paul.

They built them as apprentices with a nonprofit called Urban Boatbuilders. Organizers said it's been around for more than two decades and has worked with hundreds of kids.

But the program teaches them about a lot more than boats.

"They've learned great skills in building and working together as a team and we're here to celebrate their success," Marc Hosmer with Urban Boatbuilders said.

Next week, the students will take the canoes to the Boundary Waters.
