The 34th annual State of Minnesota Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration took place at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.

The theme of the event was "For our Children."

It's a powerful day for the nation, and here at home, hundreds of people packed the auditorium to honor the legacy of the Civil Rights leader.

More than 50 years after his death, King continues to inspire people of all ages. Leaders talked about reducing and eliminating racial disparities for future generations.

Gov. Tim Walz spoke about the need to make a real change.

"It may be frustrating and it may seem like it is unimaginable that we are going backward and that we have white supremacy in our midst and anti-Semitism. Well, the privilege side of that is this generation gets to fight that fight, this generation gets to move toward a more perfect union, and Minnesota can be the example of that," said Walz.
