The name of Historic Fort Snelling may be changing.

The Minnesota Historical Society held a public meeting Monday night to get feedback on what to call the 23-acre historic site.

Fort Snelling and cemetery will retain the name. The change would impact the area around the 1820s fort, which will undergo a multi-million dollar revitalization next year.

Controversy arises over new signs at Fort Snelling

"It's touched a nerve,"  Kevin Maijala, with the Historical Society said. "People are passionate about the stories and we're getting great feedback. We've had things from keep it Historic Fort Snelling to Historic Fort Snelling at Bdote to Historic Fort Snelling in the Spirit of Two Rivers."

The historical society will make a decision early next year. If they recommend a name change, it would go to the state legislature who would have the final say.
