Gov. Tim Walz announced Wednesday that private and public campgrounds could reopen June 1 as long as they have a preparedness plan created.

At this time, dispersed camping is allowed in state forests.

According to the DNR, 75 remote campsites in state parks will reopen for Memorial Day weekend. Another 80 remote sites are expected to be ready by May 29.

On June 1, the DNR expects to have about 20 to 30 of its campgrounds within state parks, recreation areas and state forest campgrounds ready to open up for limited service. Other lodging options, like cabins and yurts, will open as well.

The DNR says it plans to have a majority of its campgrounds open by June 15.

Those planning on camping are asked to bring their own hand sanitizer, cleaning wipes, toilet paper and other supplies for their campsites and available bathrooms.

Campers can also expect a number of facilities to remain closed, including beaches, pond-pools, visitor centers, group centers, fire towers, large-group facilities and other programs.
