The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry has leveled a $25,000 penalty against the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater in connection to the death of corrections officer Joseph Gomm.
Gomm was assaulted by an inmate at the facility on July 18, 2018. Edward Muhammed Johnson, an inmate at MCF-Stillwater at the time, is facing two counts of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree assault in connection to the fatal assault of Gomm.
According to the citation issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Division, "On July 18, 2018, the employer did not have an adequate workplace violence program for employees exposed to workplace violence."
The citation was issued on Jan. 11.
According to a Minnesota OSHA spokesperson, the Department of Corrections contested the citation on Feb. 4.
The spokesperson said the next step is an informal conference between the Department of Corrections and Minnesota OSHA.
